Maunji Bandhan/Upnayanan (thread ceremony) is one of the Shodasha (16) Sanskara.  "Up" in sanskrit means near & "Nayan" means to take, thus upnayan means taking the child to the Guru for studies. Thread ceremony qualifies the child to go for studies essential in life. This ceremony explains the Batu in details the dos & don'ts of student life. 

Maunji bandhan is one of the very important Hindu Sanskara.  It teaches a child to focus on studies and achieve excellence in the academic career.  It induces qualities like organization, punctuality, humbleness, respect and responsible behavior.

Usually thread ceremony is carried out at the age of 8.

 
       

|| Aachar Bodh || - Advice by Guru

       
    Following are some guidelines given to the Student by the Acharya (Guru) during this ceremony:

  • Ensure cleanliness of your body after using toilet/restroom, eating food, coming back from outside.

  • Perform daily prayers without fail.
  • Do not sleep during the day time.
  • Follow your teachers & do your class-work and homework always in time & in correct manner.
  • Always request your parents to give you food, do not make any fuss over food.
  • You must remain bachelor till you complete all your studies else you will not be able to achieve your goals in your life.
  
       

|| Gayatri Mantra ||

|| BhurBhoovaha Swaha Tatsaviturvarenyaam Bhargo Devasya dhimahi dhiyo yo naha prachodayat ||

   

 
       
   
  1. Om - is also called Pranav.  It is an indicator of God.  Om is chanted at the beginning of every Mantra. Om consists of an association of 3 letters A Au ma which refer to "A" - Bramha (Aapti/Utpatti - Origin/birth/generation), "U" Vishnu (Utkarsha - Prosperity),  "M" - Mahesh (Nash - Destruction).
  2. BhurBhoovaha Swaha - Indicator of Swarga (Heaven), Mrutyu Lok (Earth), Patal (Yam Lok - Hell).  This part of the Gayatri Mantra indicates that all our efforts must direct towards to betterment of the Mankind.
  3. Tatsaviturvarenyaam Bhargo Devasya dhimahi dhiyo yo naha prachodayat - We pray to & respect the enormous power of Sun, which gives us encouragement & motivation.

Gayatri Mantra is called the ‘ Mother of Vedas’ or Vedamata.
